Inside Villa Rideau: A Custom Scandinavian Log Home in Ontario
Custom Log Home Completed in Ontario in Summer 2026

Most custom log homes in Ontario ask you to choose between two things you shouldn't have to give up: a design you actually love, or a build process you can trust.
The homeowners of Villa Rideau weren't willing to compromise on either. So when they set out to build on a private forested lot near Rideau Lake in Lombardy, Ontario, they didn't want a floor plan pulled from a catalogue, and they didn't want to spend a year managing subcontractors themselves. They wanted a home that looked like it belonged in the trees — built by a team that would actually see it through.
The result is Villa Rideau: a 1,857 square foot custom home that pairs the warmth of Scandinavian log craftsmanship with the performance a Canadian winter demands. It's a clear example of what Pluspuu Homes were designed to do.
Why Custom Home Building in Ontario Needs a Better Approach
Ask around Ontario cottage country and you'll hear the same story on repeat: ballooning budgets, contractors who go quiet for weeks, and a finished home that lacks the high-quality craftsmanship & details that custom home building should demand.
That's the gap these homeowners were trying to avoid. They wanted:
A design that felt modern, functional & rooted in nature
Turn-key delivery from Trees To Keys; managed by a single team accountable for the outcome
Full confidence that the materials & log engineering would retain its value & quality for decades, not just look good on day one
That's the foundation every Pluspuu project — including Villa Rideau — is built on.
THE VISION: A Custom Home That Belongs in the Forest
The clients came to us with a clear sense of what they wanted — a home that was unique, not a design that could have been built anywhere. They wanted a custom home on their Ontario property that looked like it had grown out of the land it sat on — something that felt at home among the pines and birch trees of the Rideau Lake area.
Every decision — the orientation of the rear deck, the placement of the great room windows, the pitch of the roofline — was made to strengthen the home's connection to the surrounding natural environment.
That's the difference between a bespoke floor plan designed around a family's life, and a stock plan with pre-determined selections & sizing simply adjusted to fit a lot.
DESIGN & STYLE: Scandinavian Design, Built for a Canadian Lifestyle
Villa Rideau is a beautiful representation of Nordic design principles that define every Scandinavian log home Pluspuu builds in Canada: functionality, clean lines, high-quality materials, and advanced modern Finnish log engineering.
The exterior, blends a structure built with solid CLT logs that are engineered to pair seamlessly with the standing seam metal roof — chosen for its performance in Canada's harsh winter climates, as much as how it looks.

Before you ask...Yes! Pluspuu's roofs are absolutely engineered to withstand Canada's heavy snow loads and freezing winter climates.
Inside, warm tongue-and-groove wood ceilings run the full length of the home, drawing the eye straight through to the great room. Floor-to-ceiling windows & doors line both sides of the main corridor, allowing for a seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor environment. Polished concrete floors carry throughout the home & sunroom — a durable, low-maintenance surface that also works with the in-floor radiant heat system. Cathedral ceilings in the great room and the 305 square foot sunroom enlarge the space, while full-height sliding glass doors along the rear of the home connect the main living space to the outdoor living space outside.
FLOOR PLAN & DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS: 1,857 Sq Ft Designed for Real Life

At 1,552 square feet on the main floor plus a 305 square foot sunroom, Villa Rideau shows what a well-designed custom home in Ontario can do without adding unnecessary square footage. No space in this design is unintentional.

Great Room & Kitchen
The open-plan great room, kitchen, and dining area sit under cathedral ceilings, with the log siding feature wall as the visual centerpiece. The kitchen was custom-designed around a specific drop-in range and built-in cabinetry — a layout built for slow mornings and easy entertaining, not just for photographs.

Primary Bedroom Wing
The east wing is dedicated entirely to the primary suite: a walk-in closet, a washroom with a hanging vanity, and heated towel bars. The hanging vanity keeps the floor open for easy cleaning and adds a contemporary edge that plays well against the Scandinavian materials throughout.

The Guest Bedroom
A guest room with its own cathedral ceiling gives visitors privacy without pulling space from the main living areas.

The Sunroom
The 305 square foot sunroom is the home's most flexible space — a reading room one day, a home office the next. Motorized security shutters mean the homeowners can leave the property for extended stretches without worrying about it.
TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS: Built for the Ontario Climate
A beautiful home or cottage that can't handle an Ontario winter is a headache and a liability. Villa Rideau was engineered for comfort, resilience, and long-term value from the foundation up.
In-floor radiant heat. Every room runs on a hydronic in-floor radiant heating system one of the most efficient and comfortable heating methods available for an energy efficient home in Ontario. Unlike forced air, radiant heat warms people and surfaces directly — no cold floors, less dust circulation, and even warmth throughout the day.
400-amp service and a 48 kW standby generator. Remote properties face a reality most urban homes don't: extended power outages. Villa Rideau's electrical infrastructure can run the entire home — heating included — indefinitely through a grid outage.
EV-ready carport. The carport includes a rough-in for an EV charging station. It costs comparatively little to install during construction and considerably more to retrofit later — a small decision now with increased real resale value down the line.
Standing seam metal roof. It sheds snow cleanly, resists ice damming, and will outlast asphalt shingles on a comparable home by decades. It also happens to look great!
